Medicare Advantage

One alternative to Original Medicare is the Medicare Supplement. The other alternative is Medicare Advantage. Recipients may be enrolled in one or the other of these programs, but not both. Medicare Advantage provides the same kind of expansion to Original Medicare that the Supplement offers, but in a different manner. Whereas Medicare Supplements are purchased with monthly premiums, Medicare Advantage plans use modest co-pays and co-insurance instead. And while Medicare Supplements are private plans which must be underwritten, Medicare Advantage is a federal program with guaranteed issue. In 2003, Congress passed a law creating a new "Part C" Medicare Advantage benefit which became available in 2006. Part C actually covers Parts A and B in Original Medicare, as well as Part D, the Prescription Drug Plan (listed below.) A person enrolled in Part C Medicare Advantage is still assured all the basic Medicare benefits -- and in fact 1 out of every 4 Medicare recipients (over 11 million people) now receive their Medicare benefits through the Advantage plan.

In order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period of November 15-December 31, a person must be enrolled in Part A and eligible for Part B, and must not have ESRD. There is no underwriting involved, and you cannot be denied benefits because of age, income, and general state of health. Here in Central Indiana, the most popular form of the Medicare Advantage benefit is a "Preferred Provider Organization" (PPO). The best-sellers in this category come from United Health Care, Anthem and Humana. Jay Cox is an authorized representative for all three brands, and has enrolled over 500 clients during the past several years this program has been available. He has previously represented Medicare Advantage programs in retail sites like Walmart and Sam's Club, and this year will be in Walgreen's Drug Stores during the 2011 Annual Enrollment Period.
