Medicare Supplement

In order to eliminate the financial risk of Part A deductibles and Part B co-payments, Medicare recipients have several options for additional coverage. One popular approach is the purchase of a Medicare Supplement from a private health insurance company. Medicare Supplements (also called "Medigap") cover out-of-pocket expenses not covered by Original Medicare. There are a variety of Medicare Supplement plans, each offering different set of benefits and costs.

Medicare Supplements are guaranteed issue for the first 6 months after age 65 (or eligibility), and then guaranteed renewable for life. Enrolling later usually requires underwriting. A Medicare Supplement lets you choose your own doctor and Prescription Drug Plan, and is accepted nationwide. Certain providers will also cover the additional expense of doctors who do not accept assignment.

In June, 2010 four old Medicare Supplement plans were eliminated and three new ones were introduced. Because of the variety of coverage available, seniors are advised to consult with qualified Agents who have gone beyond the minimal licensing requirements and earned the "Medicare Supplement Accredited Advisor" designation like Jay Cox has done.
